Asparagus harvest on Alan's allotment

Asparagus grows well on the rich soil in Hove and is in season for 4-6 weeks in the spring.

It is a rich source of B6, calcium, magnesium and zinc and a good source in a wide range of other vitamins and minerals.

It has been described as "cleansing and healing".

Asparagus is a useful companion plant for tomatoes. The tomato plant repels the asparagus beetle, as do several other common companion plants of tomatoes, meanwhile asparagus may repel some harmful root nematodes that affect tomato plants.
